This organization seeks to shift the educational experience to one that includes a blended model. A focus on personalized education includes online learning within the vision of the organization’s future plans. Compass Odyssey is in its third year of implementation. It was initially put into place as part of the Race to The Top grant the organization received. The grant is over a duration of 4 years. At the time of implementation Compass Odyssey was expected to work in tandem with NWEA MAP testing. The expectation was that MAP testing would reveal a learner’s academic deficits and Compass Odyssey would provide support in a personalized format in order to close a learner’s learning gaps. The goal of the organization is to determine whether or not Compass Odyssey is a fit for providing a successful blended learning experience.
Teachers from grades TK-8th grade have been providing classroom time to all learners in order to access Compass Odyssey. Each learner has a login, password, and portfolios of activities in all content area. Learning content is chosen both through the software and by teachers. All content can be accessed at school with Chromebooks, as well as at home through almost any device (computer or tablet). All progress is recorded and data is transferred to teachers in order to monitor student progress. Students and parents may also view progress. Teachers are expected to complete surveys provided by the organization during the 4 year duration of using Compass Odyssey. Surveys will provide insight to the ease of use of the software, ease of retrieving and understanding data, as well as ease of student use and student engagement. Overall, the implementation of Compass Odyssey was based on the presumption that the organization is looking beyond the cost of the software, and looking more closely at the effectiveness of its use in meeting student personalized learning goals.
